Selective Mutism Awareness

Sorry I haven’t posted for ages! Must try to get back into the habit of doing it weekly… Anyway, what’s been happening since I last posted?

There’s been some great articles on selective mutism from various different people and websites and I’ll list a few of them below. I’d like to update the Finding Our Voices website to include SM articles as well as all the great websites and blogs so look out for that in the next few weeks and if you see anything that you think should be included please send it over.

SM articles over the last couple of months

Seeing all these news stories and articles on SM got me thinking ahead to the selective mutism awareness month in October. Yes, it’s six months away but if we all plan ahead and try to get more articles about SM out there it would be amazing. And it’s not only articles that we can use to raise awareness, let’s be creative about it. People have been running marathons, doing artwork and thinking about writing songs dedicated to SM.

Selective mutism could be as common as autism but is a lot less known and still misunderstood, however we can change that.

I feel that things are finally changing for the better!

Thanks for sharing all of these resources! I also want to help others find a sense of comfort and hope while spreading awareness. I have twins with SM and I am also a licensed clinical therapist in a therapeutic day school, so I have a book coming out this summer. It comes from here perspectives- mom of two kids with SM, therapist, and education. My website is http://www.breakingthroughselectivemutism.com

"I recommend you for your hard work in 'spreading the word' about SM. I am encouraged by the rise of interest in the condition over the 21 years of SMIRA's existence, which, I am sure, is due, in no small part, to the efforts of the organisation in raising the profile of this disorder. The more ways that people can learn about it, the better."
