Meet-ups and Giant Cookies

This weekend just gone, I met up with a group of amazing people who have (or had) SM, and it was the best weekend I’ve had in a long time. I drove to places I hadn’t ventured to before, and even though I still panicked, I didn’t get too lost and there weren’t any major catastrophes (although I did get poo’d on by a seagull, but that’s meant to be good luck).

It was a really odd feeling being around others who had all gone through the same things as I had, and who all understood it completely. It didn’t matter if I was a bit awkward, or if I didn’t talk all the time, or if I was a bit panicky about everything – because everyone had been there and knew how it felt. The meet-up was over a few days but I didn’t feel like I had to go back the next day and apologise for not talking much the day before, or for doing something silly; I just felt accepted for who I was.

Two or three years ago, the thought of meeting someone else ‘in real life’ who also had SM wouldn’t have even crossed my mind. But since I started writing and becoming part of different selective mutism groups, I’ve come to realise that there are a lot more local people who know about SM than I thought. That’s the great thing about the internet – it can connect you to people you never knew existed.

I know I haven’t updated the Finding Our Voices website in a LONG time, but I’m going to try and get back into the habit of it, so there’ll be new pages and stuff coming soon. For now, I’ll leave you with this photo of the Cookie Monster ice cream I had on the first day of the meet-up – ice cream sandwiched between two giant cookies. Yum!
